Iraq's consumer-protection framework is Law No. 1 of 2010 (18 articles across seven sections), covering consumer rights, supplier and advertiser duties, prohibitions, and penalties. It aims to protect consumer health and safety, reduce fraud and manipulation in packaging and product data, and raise consumer awareness, and it establishes a Consumer Protection Council chaired by a subject-matter expert with representatives from relevant ministries and agricultural associations. Consumers are entitled to full information about a product's specifications, usage, and guarantees, and may seek compensation through the courts for damage caused by inadequate information on domestic or imported goods. The law entered into force on the date of its publication in the Official Gazette. Iraq's separate product-conformity regime, administered by COSQC, sits in a distinct instrument — see the COSQC reference.
