Egypt Standardization Law — Presidential Decree No. 2 of 1957

Egypt's legal basis for product standards and quality control traces to Presidential Decree No. 2 of 1957, which established the Egyptian General Organization for Standardization — per EOS's own official history and confirmed by the Ministry of Trade and Industry's Arabic-language record. (Note: many English-language sources, including ISO's own member listing, cite this founding decree as "No. 29 of 1957" — an apparent long-standing transcription discrepancy; the Arabic primary record consistently gives "No. 2.") The body was restructured by Presidential Decree No. 392 of 1979 (folding in a Quality Control Centre and renaming it the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality Control) and again by Presidential Decree No. 83 of 2005, which gave it its current name, the Egyptian Organization for Standardization and Quality (EOS). Additional intermediate reorganizations occurred via Decree No. 166 of 1965 and Decree No. 59 of 1987, with the most recent restructuring under Prime Ministerial Decrees No. 3007 and No. 2677 of 2024. EOS develops Egyptian national standards for raw materials and finished products, operates the Quality Mark certification scheme, and verifies conformity of goods placed on the Egyptian market.
